Theresa Elizabeth Matheson

Theresa E. Matheson passed away peacefully in her home Sunday, August 8, 2021 at the age of 100.

She was born April 8, 1921 in Morgan City, Louisiana, she was raised by her parents Carlo & Maime (Cacioppo) Gagliano along with 4 sisters, and 6 brothers in a two-bedroom house on the Bayou. In 1945 she married the love of her life Lloyd Matheson after a whirlwind 3-day engagement. Together they settled in Bellingham, WA where they opened Matheson’s Market which went on to become a hub of the community. They welcomed 3 children into their lives and over the years 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, Lloyd, as well as her parents, siblings, great-grandson Chase, and daughter-in-law Mary Matheson.

Theresa is lovingly remembered by her children Melvin Matheson, Diane Bonczynski (Joseph), and Sandra Matheson; grandchildren Monica Perry (Karl), Michelle Tatum (Curtis), David Matheson (Liz), Jennifer Petrie (J.P), Tina Spanhak (Rick), Joseph Jr. Bonczynski (Liz), Michael Boncyznski (Melissa), Megan Galloway, Molly Seimears (Nathan), and 17 of her great-grandchildren.

Theresa worked in their Matheson's Market store as well as making deliveries and pick-ups of groceries and supplies. She was active in St. Cecelia's Guild at St. Joseph's Catholic Church for several decades. She spent her many years enjoying the company of her family and friends, a good book, and a blended margarita on her birthday. 

A funeral mass will be offered by Father Francis Thumbi, Thursday, August 19, 2021, 10:00 AM, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5781 Hendrickson Ave., Ferndale, WA 98248, Burial to follow at Greenacres Cemetery in Ferndale.
