Shirley Mae Muscutt

Shirley Mae Muscutt, our beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, and aunt (affectionately known as “Grammy” to grandchildren and “Gigi” to great-grandchildren) went home to her Lord and Savior on the morning of September 16, 2016, surrounded by her children.

Shirley was born on August 20, 1932, to George and Leah Wilson in Bellingham, Washington, where she remained for the rest of her life. She grew up camping and playing on Lake Whatcom and attended the Silver Beach Community Youth Group where she accepted the Lord as her Savior. Deeply devoted to her faith, Shirley was the prayer warrior in her family, stubbornly persisting in entrusting her dear ones to the God she so fiercely loved. After God, her passion was her home and her family. She loved where she lived and spent her life making her house the cozy home it was. Never was there a day that she didn’t have a homemade baked good on the counter for unexpected guests. She was infamous for her cooking and baking – from chocolate pie at Thanksgiving to her “hot buns” at Christmas to her potato salad at Easter. She loved summer, where she spent her time outside gardening in the sun, watching the grandkids swim in her pool, or umping the neighborhood baseball game that, of course, would break out in her yard. Her home was the central gathering place for the family with countless barbeques in the summer, game nights, sleep outs, Christmas festivities, birthdays, and Easter dinners. Her greatest joy was her family, and she never missed a sporting event, graduation, recital, shower, wedding, or any other important event. Her life demonstrated such calm, sacrifice, and humility. She was smart and dedicated and abundant in love for her family. She was generous with her money and her time. If someone had a need, she filled it. In many ways, her life paralleled that of the Jesus she so passionately followed. She was an incredibly special woman that we were supremely blessed and honored to know and love. She will always hold a sacred space of joy in our hearts because her life has irrevocably changed ours forever.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie Muscutt; parents, George and Leah Wilson; brother, Milton “Bud” Wilson; and sister, Doreen Butenschoen. She is survived by her brother, Don (Phyllis) Wilson; sister, Myrna (Roy) Harmon; sister-in-law, Evelyn Wilson; her 3 children, Mitch (Greta) Muscutt, Tracy (Tom) Rhone, and Tammy (Terry) Wilcox; her grandchildren, Terry (Mandi) Muscutt, Lyndsay (Lenny) Muscutt, Travis Rhone, Tarell (Seth) Allen, Tiffany (Adam) York, Brandon (Melissa) Wilcox, Tessa (Ryan) Ebbesen, Austin (Nicole) Wilcox, Zackary (Blaik) Wilcox, and Remington Wilcox; her great-grandchildren, Kascia and Lauren Muscutt, Jainah Helkey, Ty and Avery York, Sadie and Kylee Allen, Walker and Taryn Ebbesen, Kelton and Jax Wilcox, Sawyer Wilcox, and Scarlet and Copper Wilcox; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00pm on Monday, September 26th at The Firs Lounge, 4605 Cable Street, Bellingham.

The family would also like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Lynden Manor and Whatcom Hospice for taking such exceptional care of Shirley during her battle with Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Whatcom Hospice Foundation (www.whatcomhospice.org) or the Alzheimer Society of Washington (www.alzsociety.org).
