Ronald James Clapp, of Bellingham, Washington, put out his “Gone Fishing” sign on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at the age of eighty-eight. He was born in Bellingham, Washington to James W. Clapp and May Clapp (Bodicoat) and remained a lifelong resident. Ron graduated from Bellingham High School in 1954 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. His service began in June of 1954 until he was honorably discharged in June of 1958. Ron served as a signalman second class petty officer and was on 4 deployments overseas during this time. During his time in the service, he netted the catch of his life, (Carolyn Cranford) while in California. They were married in June of 1958, in Las Vegas and just recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. After returning home from the service Ron went to work for Puget Sound Pulp and Timber which later became Geogia Pacific. Ron worked there for 37 years.
First and foremost, Ron was an avid fisherman on any body of water. His fishing prowess was the envy of many. Whether pulling a prize chinook out of the waters of the San Juans, an elusive steelhead out of the Nooksack, or a Cutthroat trout out of Lake Whatcom, the question of many was always, how? How Ron, do you catch all these fish? Ron’s standard answer was always “A Purple Flatfish”. ~I Y K Y K~

He has also served on the Honor Guard for over 20 years, attending an average of 80 veterans funerals a year during this span. Ron was also a member of the Agate Bay volunteer fire department for 35 years.
Ron also enjoyed many mornings with his coffee buddies at Lafeen’s, and his Georgia Pacific breakfast friends. Also, Friday morning coffee at the American Legion.
Ron was preceded in death by his mother May, and his father James. Ron is survived by his wife Carolyn Clapp, sister Carol Smith, his children Russell and spouse Roni, Loren and spouse Janis, grandchildren Kennith and spouse Erica, Theodore and spouse Molly, great grandchildren Roman and Miles, plus many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service with Military Honors by American Legion Post #7 of Bellingham at Greenacres Cemetery, Friday, July 26, 2024, at 12:00 Noon, at 5700 Northwest Dr, Ferndale, WA 98248.
