Ric Ghirardini, age 68, died Friday July 10, 2015 at his home in Bellingham. He was raised in West Haven, Connecticut, son of Fred and Jean Ghirardini. He graduated from West Haven High School and University of New Haven. Ric made his way to Seattle in 1972 in a van with friends and two cats. Gas was cheap and hair was long! He lived in Seattle, Kirkland, Oso, and Arlington before settling in Bellingham in 1983. Ric went to Woodstock! He traveled in Europe and rode his motorcycle through Canada and back across the United States. Because of all his great adventures in life, he encouraged and supported his family to follow their dreams and passions. Ric's love of all sports lasted a lifetime! Playing hockey on local ponds in West Haven was a favorite pastime. Ric was interested in local/national politics and issues. He watched and participated in city council meetings. Ric was a steward of the earth—he enjoyed taking long walks around town and on local trails. He picked up litter and recycled everything!
Ric was an early childhood educator with the Opportunity Council for twenty years and spent twenty-five summers fighting wildland fires for the Department of Natural Resources. He worked for the City of Bellingham Parks Department at Bayview Cemetery for seven years.
Ric is survived by his loving wife Pamela Head; his wonderful sons Dominic Ghirardini and Gabriel Ghirardini; former wife Melody Ghirardini and her children Eric Sullivan and Bethany Sullivan; sister Carol Ghirardini Curry and her children Sean Curry, Kristin Curry Malavenda and Nicole Curry; extended family and friends around the country; and family cat Kitty Carlisle.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks and gratitude to Virginia Mason Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, and Whatcom Hospice for caring for Ric during his illness. He will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association and Whatcom Hospice. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday August 19 at 6:00 PM at Squalicum Boathouse in Zuanich Park. Remember to floss, watch the center line, and be here now.
