Michael Reed Torfin, born 53 years ago in International Falls, Minnesota, died June 3, 2014 at home in Wickersham, WA leaving behind the love of his life, Judy Torfin. He was preceded by his parents, Phyllis Groendyk and Karl Torfin, and sister Vickie LaPine. Surviving sisters are Karla Vessey, Rhonda Torfin, Glenda Heggie, Roxanne Groendyk, Teri Moody and Jackie Groendyk. Mike’s three sons are Brandon, Adam and Eric Torfin. Besides his two stepsons, Jason and Jonathan Holmes, he was raising Adel DeClue and Sean Guthrie, children of his heart.
Mike worked hard at everything he did; He would say “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” His work ethic came from his childhood helping on his family’s farm, rising early to milk the cows. He later coached little league baseball and loved working with kids, hoping he made a difference in their lives. After an illness, mike retired from Boeing where he enjoyed working for over 21 years in various positions, eventually serving in the paint shop where he shared lunches with Tommy. Though he didn’t serve in the military (his wife did) he was a member of the American Legion, where he appreciated our American Servicemen and followed their efforts every night on the news.
Mike was a quiet man with an infectious laugh and a warm generous heart. He gave his time and attention and was “the barbecue King of” Wickersham where he held court over the tantalizing smells of steak, chicken with special flavoring. Family and friends gathered around as he cocked his magic with special secret recipes he took with him to heaven.
The day before his untimely passing, a conversation amount friends turned to the subject of travel. Mike stood silent, taking it all in as exotic locations were discussed. He didn’t have to think about what he’d say. He knew, Right here is where I want to be Home.” He found happiness in the mundane things most of us overlook: the rose bush he coaxed through the winter, clearing the kitchen counter, getting Adel and Sean off to school listening to the evening train, buds on his young fruit trees, dogs on his lap, mourning doves and the prideful fact that he never had a tattoo or a piercing.
Wednesday, June 11, 6:00 PM at the Little Brown Chapel (on State Route 9 in Acme) there will be a celebration of Mike’s life. Memorial donations may be sent to Little Brown Chapel, building fund, State Route 9, Acme, WA 98220. Contact Ray Hockett 360-595-2368 or Roy Hensler 360-595-236
