Michael Warren Cushing, age 70, of Alger, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014 in Bellingham. He was born December 4, 1944 in Traverse City, Michigan, to Warren and Marjorie (Grant) Cushing.
Michael spent his early years in northern Michigan before moving to North Carolina, and then New Hampshire. He graduated from Woodbury High School in Salem Depot, New Hampshire in 1962. Michael enlisted in the United States Army directly after high school and served as a technical specialist for three years.
After his time in the Army, Michael attended college at the New Mexico Institute for Mining and Technology and the University of California at Berkeley before earning his bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Washington in 1973.
Michael was lucky enough to have been truly passionate for his longtime career as an engineer. He worked as a software engineer for Lockheed Martin before becoming an electrical engineer at SensorLink Corporation in Ferndale, Washington. Even in retirement, he continued to work as an independent consultant for companies around the state.
Michael was an avid outdoorsman, a private pilot, and a sailor. He was happiest in the air or on the water.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Warren Cushing. He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Cushing; sister, Cathryn Phillips; brothers, Rick and Scott Cushing; wife, Cathy Cushing; daughters, Anne and Liisa Cushing; son, David Cushing; and grandsons, Samuel and Benjamin Mireault.
