Doris Mae Robertson, 97, of Ferndale, WA, passed away peacefully April 24th at Malloy Place in Ferndale, Washington while Amazing Grace was being sung to her by daughters, Marianne and Susan, along with her church worship leader.
She was born March 17, 1925 to father August and mother Edith Pehrson in Bellingham, WA. Raised in Ferndale all her life, Doris graduated from Ferndale High School in 1942. She was preceded in death by her husband Norm of 65 years in 2014.
Doris had many friends and was loved for her joy and many talents. She was an accomplished musician who could play instruments ranging from a bass fiddle, accordion, organ and piano. Doris was the organist and pianist at First Baptist Church in Ferndale for many years and very active in their music ministry. Norm and Doris sang many duets with her having to stand on a stepstool to help balance their height difference. She taught all her kids to play piano and expected them to learn one more instrument. She was a Master Gardener whose dedicated labor brought color and beauty to her Vista Drive neighborhood. While gardening, she would make friends with strangers who often walked by. Doris also enjoyed sewing, needle work and bowling with her league friends over many years.
When you stepped into Norm and Doris' home, you were greeted with aromas of a homecooked meal or baked goods. Doris was an avid cook and baker, known for her pies, cookies, canning and the uncanny ability to make gravy out of anything. Because of her love expressed through her hands, she hosted many holiday gatherings as well as church functions over the years.
After Doris graduated from Ferndale High School, she worked as a teller at the First National Bank in Ferndale. She met Norm Robertson at a George and Frances Monroe-Ferndale First Baptist Youth meeting, where love led to marriage on December 10th, 1948. Doris loved and cared for Norm and her children over the many years to come. When Norm was seriously injured in a vehicle accident in 1985, she steadfastly cared for him through the end of his life in 2014. Doris was the epitome of a homemaker; a loving, loyal wife, mother and grandmother to the end of her days. Her faith in Christ was what she held onto most dear and exemplified out by being a gracious and loving servant.
The family is so grateful for the loving care Doris received from both a private caregiver and then Malloy Place in her final years while declining from Alzheimer's Disease.
Doris is survived by; sons Doug (Jill) Robertson & Tom (Susan) Robertson; daughters Gayle Robertson & Marianne Brudwick; grandchildren Christy (Kyle) Johnson, Lindsay (Brett) Williams, Maria (Brandon) Warren, Anna (Brandon) MacDonald, Josiah & Micah Robertson, Bo, Katie (Conor) Palomarez, & Kyler (Taylor) Brudwick; and 7 great grandchildren (Elle, Grant, Grady, Jack, Maelle, Carys and Greyson).
A memorial service will be held in her honor on Sat. May 7th at 2pm at First Baptist Church in Ferndale. Gifts in her honor may be sent to Whatcom Community Foundation, 1500 Cornwall Ave. #202, Bellingham, WA 98225 with a memo: Robertson Family Fund.
