Billie Lee “Bill” Daws, age 79, of Ferndale, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2012 at the Whatcom Hospice House in Bellingham. He was born August 27, 1932 in Ferndale, Washington to Earl Ambrose and Olive Clara (Smith) Daws. Bill was a lifetime resident of Ferndale, graduated from Ferndale High School in the Class of 1950, with numerous athletic awards in Football, Basketball and Track. He married is High School Sweetheart Melvina Mount in October of 1952 in Ferndale at the United Church. Bill Graduated from Western Washington University in June of 1955 and began a Teaching and Coaching career, but soon was drafted into the United States Army in June of 1956 and was stationed in Germany and was Honorably Discharged in April of 1958. Bill then returned to teaching and coaching and held several different positions at Ferndale High School, such as Varsity Football Head Coach, Head Track Coach, Freshman Football Head Coach, and Athletic Director. In 1981 he was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder which forced him to retire. In retirement his passion was Saltwater Salmon Fishing with his son Jeff and Washington Husky Football with his son Greg and his dogs.
His family hopes that every day he gets to hear the phrase "Hey You Got One" and the sound of the Husky Touchdown Siren, he will be dearly missed. Private family inurnment with Military Honors will be at Greenacres Cemetery in Ferndale. A memorial open house will be held Thursday, July 26, 2012, at the Ferndale High School Cafeteria, 5830 Golden Eagle Drive from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.
