Betty Alzadia Hathaway MacDonough passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024 in Bellingham, Washington. She was born on March 25, 1932 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, the youngest of six children, and was preceded in death by her parents, Stephan Hathaway and Elsie Brown Hathaway, her brother, Wilfred and sisters Alice, Arlene, Hopi, and Phyllis and her beloved husband Donald Raymond MacDonough. She is survived by her three children Magenta Pierrot (born 1951), William MacDonough (born 1953), and Donald MacDonough (born 1965), her grandchildren Julian, Jeremy and Serena and great grandchildren Mia, Miles, Cameron, Ian, Phinn and Taylorcaitlin. Betty grew up on a small farm in Slocum, Rhode Island and attended North Kingston High School where she met her future husband. Don and Betty were married in 1950 and a few years later, in 1957, now a family of four, they travelled by car from Rhode Island to San Pedro, California and took up residence in Southern California finally settling in the San Diego area. Don Sr., Betty and Don Jr. moved to Houston in 1973 and returned to their beloved Southern California in the late 70’s and in 1988, so that they could be closer to their grandchildren Don and Betty moved to Bellingham, Washington where they finally settled. Betty will be remembered for her energetic and cheerful presence, her love of children, and her devotion to her husband. Don and Betty had been married for 71 years when he passed away in 2021. She worked at many jobs over the years. She was a waitress, a secretary, records clerk at the district attorney’s office in SanDiego, the commissary officer at the Whatcom County jail in Bellingham and volunteered for a number of agencies including St. Joseph Hospital and the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce and participated in a literacy program helping adults learn to read. After completing the Early Childhood Education program at Grossmont College in 1969 she taught pre-school at the Fletcher Hills Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted wife, mother and housewife and so enjoyed having her family around her. She will be missed by all those whose lives were touched by her cheerful presence and caring nature, her pleasant laughter and bright beautiful smile. Rest In Peace Betty. We all love you so much and will so dearly miss you.
